I have visited Stony Brook State Park for family reunions nearly every year since I was a very young child. (Over 25 years) I have some very fond memories of swimming in the icy cold pools, wading up stream, but new visitors beware!, this is not allowed any more, and a hefty fine will be imposed upon you by the park rangers. Hiking is fantastic, the falls and natural shale-stone gorges are amazing. Picnic areas are abundant and there are even campsites available. I give it 4 stars because the rules for swimming have become a lot more stricter even within the past 3 years. We couldn't even go under the mini falls between the shallow and the deeper swim areas. Disappointed. Otherwise the facilities for picnics and other events are great!

This is a great place for a quiet walk. The trail isn't very difficult along the brook. There are some nice views and plenty of picture opportunities. I've been going here since '83 and it hasn't changed. There are some nice places to get a quick bite in Dansville after your hike.

The campsites were a bit close together but that's somewhat to be expected with state parks. Our site backed right up to the brook so we took the kids down there for some hiking and playing. The playground is big with plenty to do despite being busy. The rest of the park was nice including the swimming area. We'll definitely return in years to come.

I have been coming here my whole life. It is one of the nicest and well maintained state parks I have been to. You feel very much like you are surrounded by nature, but you still have the luxuries necessary for glamping. My understanding is the are changing the loop structure and combining/removing some sites this coming off season, so be sure to make sure you request the appropriate site number and get your reservations in early!

Hands down best public park to explore the gorge. Walk right along/in the water with towering cliffs on either side. Magnificent waterfalls with easy access to the brook.
